How do teachers deal with the pressures of their jobs?
It was lovely to get my daughter Laura on to my show. She’s a busy teacher in a primary school and together we discussed how she deals with the pressures of her workload, and the stresses and strains of the first few years of her professional life.
Happily, I also heard how input from her management team, colleagues, and her own strategies have helped her to deal with those stresses and strains and achieve a good “work-life balance” (most of the time!). We also discuss how,for her, the rewards of teaching are now far greater than any of the down-sides.
I think there are a lot of interesting pointers towards good mental health in this show, whether you are a teacher or not.
However if you are affected by any of the issues in this show I would recommend that you contact the Education Support Partnership. They are the only UK charity providing mental health and wellbeing support to teachers and everyone working in education.
They have a free, confidential helpline staffed by BACP qualified counsellors, where anyone in the education sector can get help when they need it:
